Know The Species

Burchell’s Zebras are social animals and live in large herds led by a dominant male.

They are grazers and feed on grasses and occasionally on leaves and bark, and can survive for long periods without water by obtaining moisture from their food.

Burchell’s Zebras are known for their excellent eyesight and hearing, which helps them detect predators such as lions and hyenas.

Interestingly, Burchell’s Zebras have a unique behaviour where they engage in mutual grooming, helping to strengthen social bonds and remove parasites from each other’s coats.

Burchell’s Zebras are an important prey species for many predators, and their conservation status is currently stable, with populations found in protected areas throughout their range.

How To Aim From Different Angles

ALWAYS KEEP THE MUZZLE POINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION

THE ZEBRA
KNOW YOUR SHOT

Bisect the angle formed between the front legs, aim in the bottom third of the distance between the bottom of the chest and the top of the back of the zebra.
If you are using a 375 zebra seldom move far from where they receive the shot. Subject to using premium grade ammunition and no deflections.

THE ZEBRA
KNOW YOUR SHOT

Aim for the inside of the closer shoulder to allow the shot to penetrate the vital organs. Zebra shot placement with medium bore calibers usually ends well for the hunter. Do not take the shot if you are unsure about yourself.

THE ZEBRA
KNOW YOUR SHOT

Put the shot in the centre of the chest of the zebra where the throat joins the body.
Avoid head shots. If the zebra gives a tremendous jump with his head down initially, it was a great shot.

THE ZEBRA
KNOW YOUR SHOTZEBRA

Shot placement on zebra has two possibilities. General rule of thumb on a broadside shot is to place the shot directly behind the shoulder of the zebra, about halfway up from the bottom of the chest to the top of the back. This will lead to a definite lung shot.
According to previous generations the following was the rule: if you can eat it, shoot it behind the shoulder; if it can eat you, shoot it on the shoulder.
Place the shot right inside the sergeant stripes for a heart shot if you are presented with a perfect broadside shot.

Caliber For Hunting A Zebra

When it comes to hunting zebras in Africa, it is important to select a caliber that offers sufficient power and effectiveness. In this case, a mindset of “more is good” is applicable due to the toughness of these animals. Using appropriate ammunition will minimize the time spent tracking wounded zebras and increase the chances of a successful hunt. Opt for a medium- to large bore rifle that allows for accurate shooting and ensures your comfort during the hunt.

Here are some of the recommended calibers for hunting zebras in Africa:

• The .308 caliber, utilizing a minimum bullet weight of 150 grains, is a reliable choice for zebra hunting. Its versatility and manageable recoil make it popular among hunters.
• The .30-06 caliber, also employing a minimum bullet weight of 150 grains, is considered one of the best calibers for hunting plains game, including zebras. Its proven performance and wide selection of ammunition options make it a reliable choice.

• For increased power, calibers such as .300 WSM and .300 Win Mag, or similar options, can be effective when using bullet weights of 150 grains and 165 grains respectively

The .375 H&H, utilizing a 300-grain bullet weight, provides significant stopping power and is well-suited for zebras. It is a caliber often trusted for hunting larger African game.

Selecting the appropriate caliber and ammunition is crucial to ensure clean and ethical kills while hunting zebras. Always adhere to local hunting regulations, prioritize responsible hunting practices, and consider seeking guidance from experienced professional hunters or outfitters when planning your zebra hunting expedition.
