Home » Hunting Catalogue – Blesbuck
Please have a look at the shot placement indications Above. For most North American game species the vitals are not always situated at the place you are used to aiming at.
Blesbuck is a medium-sized antelope found in southern Africa. They are known for their distinctive white face and forehead, which contrasts with their brown body and white underbelly.
Blesbuck males typically weigh around 150-200 pounds, while females are slightly smaller. They are grazers and feed on grasses, and are adapted to survive in semi-arid grasslands and savannas. Interestingly, blesbuck have a unique behaviour known as “pronking”, where they leap into the air with their forelegs outstretched and their backs arched, as a way of communicating with other members of their herd.
Blesbuck were once hunted almost to extinction, but conservation efforts have helped to restore their populations in recent years.
The shot should be placed on the shoulder, in line with the front leg. Shot height to be one third of the way up from the bottom of the brisket to the top of the hump on the back. This shot should lead to a high heart shot, low lung shot.
Alternatively, a very good shot placement area is right behind the shoulder approximately midway between the brisket and the hump. This will be a good lung shot.
Place the shot where the bottom of the throat meets the chest. Remember blesbok habitually shake their heads up and down. Be sure not to fire the shot during the downward phase of the head shake.
Bisect the angle formed by the front legs and place the shot perpendicular to the top of the angle, at the same height as a broadside shot. Do not attempt this shot placement if using light calibers with light-weight ammunition. This could lead to a wounded animal when the projectile is stopped in the stomach content.
On a quartering to shot aim for the back of the opposite side shoulder at the same height as for a broadside shot.
