Home » Hunting Catalogue – Bushbuck
Bushbuck shot placement is critical to your health. Although these animals are smaller than your typical white tail deer and impala, they have a nasty habit of trying to attack their attackers.
If wounded, they become dangerous on the follow-up. Read our shot placement suggestions carefully and make sure of a clean kill.
The Bushbuck is a medium-sized antelope found throughout sub-Saharan Africa. They can weigh up to 150 pounds and stand up to four feet tall at the shoulder.
Bushbucks are recognized for their reddish-brown coat with white spots on their sides, and both males and females have spiral-shaped horns that can grow up to 18 inches long in males.
They are browsers and feed on leaves, shoots, and fruits, and can survive in dense forested areas.
Bushbucks are solitary or live in small family groups and are known for their shy and elusive nature, often hiding in thick vegetation to avoid predators.
Interestingly, Bushbucks have a unique defence mechanism where they release a strong-smelling fluid from their skin glands when threatened, which can deter predators.
Bushbucks are an important prey species for many predators, and their conservation status is currently stable, with populations found in protected areas throughout their range.
The shot should be placed on the shoulder, in line with the front leg. Shot height to be one third of the way up from the bottom of the brisket to the top of the hump on the back. This shot should lead to a high heart shot, low lung shot.
Alternatively, a very good shot placement area is right behind the shoulder approximately midway between the brisket and the hump. This will be a good lung shot.
A quartering away shot on bushpig is fine if the angle is not too acute. Aim at the opposite shoulder at the same height as for a broadside shot.
Aim for the inside of the closer shoulder of the bushpig, one third of the way between the bottom of the brisket and the top of the back.
Due to the position of the head in relation to the body, facing on shots for bushpig should be avoided.
