KNOW YOUR SHOT

Hunting a hippopotamus (hippo) in South Africa requires careful shot placement to ensure a quick, ethical, and effective kill. It’s important to note that hunting regulations and requirements for hunting hippos can vary, so always consult with local authorities, professional hunters, or outfitters for specific guidelines and regulations.

Know The Species

The hippopotamus, or hippo for short, is a large, semi-aquatic mammal found in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite their bulky appearance, hippos are surprisingly agile in the water and can hold their breath for up to 5 minutes while submerged.

They are social animals, often found in groups of up to 30 individuals, and are known for their territorial behaviour, especially in the presence of intruders. Hippos are herbivores and feed primarily on grass, spending most of their day submerged in water to avoid the heat of the sun.

They are considered one of the most dangerous animals in Africa due to their territorial behaviour and aggressive nature, particularly when threatened or cornered. Despite this, hippos play an important role in their ecosystem as their dung provides nutrients to aquatic plants and supports the food chain in water bodies where they reside

How To Aim From Different Angles

ALWAYS KEEP THE MUZZLE POINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION

THE HIPPO
KNOW YOUR SHOT

If the hippo presents a broadside position, aim for the area just behind the shoulder. This shot placement allows for maximum penetration into the vital organs. Be aware that a hippo’s vital organs are positioned higher in the body compared to many other game animals.

THE HIPPO
KNOW YOUR SHOT

Aim for the vital organs of the hippo, which include the heart and lungs. The ideal shot placement is behind the shoulder and slightly above the halfway point of the body. This area provides the best chance of reaching the vital organs and causing rapid incapacitation.

THE HIPPO
KNOW YOUR SHOT

When hunting a hippo, it’s important to consider their large size and thick skin. Shots from the front or directly facing the hippo may not penetrate deeply enough to reach vital organs. Avoid shooting at extreme angles that may result in poor penetration.

THE HIPPO
KNOW YOUR SHOT

If the hippo is quartering away from you, aim slightly behind the shoulder on the side facing away. This shot placement provides an opportunity to reach the vital organs, including the lungs and heart. Aim to hit the midsection between the shoulder and the hindquarters.

THE HIPPO
KNOW YOUR SHOT

Hippos are large and robust animals, requiring sufficient firepower to ensure a humane kill. Calibers such as .375 H&H Magnum, .416 Rigby, or even larger calibers are typically recommended for hunting hippos. Use premium-grade ammunition designed for deep penetration and controlled expansion.
