Home » Hunting Catalogue – Jackal
The Jackal is a medium-sized wild dog found in various habitats throughout Africa, including savannas, deserts, and forests
There are three species of Jackal found in Africa:
Jackals are known for their slender build, pointed ears, and bushy tails. They are opportunistic predators and scavengers, feeding on a variety of food sources including small mammals, birds, insects, and carrion.
Jackals are also known for their social behaviour, with many individuals living in packs and using vocalisations to communicate with one another. Interestingly, Jackals are known for their ability to scavenge off larger predators, such as lions and hyenas, by stealing their kills.
Jackals are not currently threatened, but some populations are declining due to habitat loss and hunting in some areas.
A well-placed head shot is the most effective and humane method for taking down a jackal. Aim for the head, targeting the brain or the area just behind the ear. This shot placement ensures instant incapacitation and minimizes suffering.
If a head shot is not feasible or safe, a chest shot is the next best option. Aim for the chest area, specifically the heart and lungs. Place your shot behind the shoulder for optimal penetration and organ damage. This shot placement is effective in quickly incapacitating the jackal.
It is generally recommended to avoid body shots on jackals unless you have a clear shot at the vital organs. Jackals are small and agile animals, and body shots may result in a less immediate kill, leading to a wounded and potentially elusive target.
Keep in mind the distance of your shot when aiming at a jackal. Ensure that you are within your effective shooting range and have a clear sight picture. Shots taken at longer distances may require adjustments for bullet drop and wind drift.
When selecting a caliber for hunting jackals in South Africa, it is important to consider the animal’s size and the typical hunting distances involved. Here are some suitable calibers for hunting jackals:
