The Waterbuck is a large antelope species found in sub-Saharan Africa, known for its shaggy, grey-brown coat and characteristic white ring on its rump.
They are often found near water sources such as rivers, lakes, and swamps, as they rely on water to escape from predators such as lions and hyenas.
Waterbucks are grazers and feed on grasses and other vegetation.
Interestingly, Waterbucks have a unique defense mechanism where they secrete a strong, musky odour from their sweat glands, which helps deter predators and acts as a waterproofing agent for their fur.
Waterbucks are also known for their large, curved horns, which are present in both males and females and can grow up to 3 feet in length.
Waterbucks are relatively common and not currently threatened, but their populations are declining due to habitat loss and hunting in some areas.
The ideal shot placement on a waterbuck is a broadside shot, where the animal is standing perpendicular to you. Aim for the vital area behind the shoulder. Place your shot right behind the shoulder, aiming for the heart and lungs. This shot placement ensures quick and efficient penetration, leading to a clean kill.
If the waterbuck is slightly angled towards you, you can take a quartering towards shot. Aim to place your shot slightly forward of the shoulder, angling towards the opposite shoulder. This shot placement allows for penetration into the vitals while avoiding the shoulder bone.
If the waterbuck is slightly angled away from you, you can take a quartering away shot. Aim to place your shot behind the shoulder and angling towards the opposite shoulder. This shot
placement allows for vital organ penetration while avoiding the shoulder bone.
The head-on shot should be avoided, if possible, as it can be challenging to penetrate the thick frontal bone and reach the vital organs. However, if this is the only shot available, aim for the center of the chest, just below the chin, where the neck meets the body.
When hunting a waterbuck in South Africa, it is recommended to use a medium to large bore rifle that provides sufficient power and penetration. The following calibers are commonly used for hunting waterbuck:
When selecting a caliber, it is essential to consider factors such as shot placement, bullet selection, and your own shooting proficiency. It is crucial to choose a caliber you can handle accurately and comfortably, as shot placement is of utmost importance in ensuring an ethical and humane kill. Additionally, always use high-quality ammunition appropriate for hunting purposes. Consult with experienced hunters or professional guides for specific recommendations based on your hunting situation and preferences
